A practical guide you can follow at home.
Bluetooth streaming in hearing aids is incredibly useful — until it suddenly isn’t. If your hearing aids won’t connect to your phone, only stream to one ear, or the app won’t open or respond, you’re not doing anything wrong. These issues are common and usually related to Bluetooth itself rather than the hearing aids. The good news is that most Bluetooth problems can be fixed in a few simple steps. This guide explains what’s going on and walks you through the most reliable ways to reconnect your hearing aids to your phone.

Why Bluetooth Hearing Aids Sometimes Stop Working
Bluetooth connections are controlled largely by your phone’s operating system, not just the hearing aids.
On iPhones, the connection for Made for iPhone hearing aids is managed by Apple. When Apple releases software updates, Bluetooth connections can occasionally become unstable until hearing aid apps or firmware are updated to match.
Android phones can experience similar issues, particularly after system updates.
This doesn’t mean:
Your hearing aids are faulty
Your phone is broken
Your audiologist has done something wrong
It’s simply how Bluetooth technology behaves.
Common Bluetooth Problems and What to Do
Streaming only to one hearing aid
This is often caused by the phone’s position. Your body can block the Bluetooth signal.
Try this first
Move your phone to a different pocket or hand
If that doesn’t help:
Turn Bluetooth off, wait 30 seconds, then turn it back on
Turn your hearing aids off and on
If the issue continues, follow the re-pairing steps later in this guide.
The hearing aid app won’t connect
This usually means the phone and hearing aids have lost synchronisation.
Try this order
Restart your hearing aids
Turn Bluetooth off and on
Close and reopen the app
If it still won’t connect, forgetting and re-pairing the devices usually resolves it.
Always Check for Updates First
Before trying anything else, make sure your phone and hearing aid app are up to date.
Update your phone software
On iPhone
Go to Settings
Tap General
Tap Software Update
Install any available updates
On Android
Open Settings
Tap Software Update or Security
Follow the on-screen instructions
Update your hearing aid app
On iPhone
Open the App Store
Tap your profile icon
Scroll to see pending updates and tap Update
On Android
Open Google Play Store
Tap your profile icon
Select Manage apps & device
Tap Update
Turn Bluetooth Off and On
This simple step fixes many Bluetooth issues.
Open Settings
Go to Bluetooth
Turn Bluetooth off
Wait 30–60 seconds
Turn Bluetooth back on
Try streaming or opening the app again.
Forget and Re-Pair Your Hearing Aids (Most Reliable Fix)
If problems continue, this is usually the solution.
Step 1: Forget the hearing aids
Go to Settings > Bluetooth
Find your hearing aids in the list
Tap the information icon
Select Forget This Device
Some hearing aid apps also allow you to forget devices within the app.
Step 2: Restart your phone
Turn your phone off completely, then back on.
Step 3: Re-pair the hearing aids.
Pairing Hearing Aids to an iPhone
Open the battery doors or place rechargeable hearing aids in the charger
On your iPhone, go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing Devices
Make sure Bluetooth is on
Close the battery doors or remove aids from the charger
Tap the hearing aid name when it appears
Tap Pair (you may see two pairing requests — accept both)
Once paired, your hearing aids will appear with a checkmark.
Pairing Hearing Aids to an Android Phone
Open Settings
Tap Connections or Bluetooth
Turn Bluetooth on
Open battery doors for 5 seconds, then close them
Rechargeable aids: place in charger for 5 seconds, then remove
Scan for available devices if needed
Select your hearing aids from the list
Confirm pairing
You should hear a confirmation tone in the hearing aids.
A Note About Phonak Hearing Aids and Unitron Hearing Aids
Hearing aids from Phonak and Unitron work slightly differently.
Both hearing aids pair with the app
Only the right hearing aid pairs for phone call streaming
This is normal and not a fault.
When Deleting and Reinstalling the App Helps
If nothing else works:
Forget the hearing aids
Delete the hearing aid app
Restart your phone
Reinstall the app
Re-pair the hearing aids
This is usually the final step before contacting your audiologist.
When to Contact Your Audiologist
If you’ve:
Updated everything
Restarted devices
Forgotten and re-paired
Reinstalled the app
…and the problem continues, your audiologist can check for firmware updates or other issues.
Bluetooth Can Be Frustrating — But It’s Still Worth Using
Bluetooth isn’t perfect, but it allows:
Phone calls directly to your hearing aids
Music and TV streaming
Easy control through apps
For most issues, forgetting the devices, re
starting the phone, and re-pairing solves the problem.
Once you’ve done it once or twice, it becomes much easier.
